Room At The Top Special Edition DVD

After doing a superb job with its This Sporting Life restoration, Network is reissuing another kitchensink classic with the Room At The Top Special Edition.

Adapted from John Braine's superb novel, the 1958 film version of Room At The Top chronicles the life of ambitious working class lad Joe Lampton (Laurence Harvey), pursuing the daughter of an influential local industrialist (Susan - Heather Sears) before falling for an older married woman (Alice - Simone Signoret). He's forced to choose between the two - but his choice only leads to tragedy.

The new version is a brand new transfer from the original 35mm film, with extras including an audio commentary, image gallery and press cuttings. Look out for it on 26th January 2009 - if Network send us one in advance, we'll have a review before the release date.

Network releases 'banned' 1960s movie Who Killed Teddy Bear

Probably tame by today's standards, Network is releasing the once banned Who Killed Teddy Bear from 1965.

Starring Sal Mineo, Juliet Prowse, Jan Murray and Elaine Stritch, this New York crime thriller centres around a police lieutenant who embarks on a one-man crusade to track down a depraved sex maniac after a female nightclub DJ receives a disturbing series of obscene phone calls. The race is on to find the man responsible...before he carries out threats.

It was refused a certificate due to its 'sleazy' subject matter back in the day, but looks worth the effort today as a classy period thriller with plenty of energy and a cool soundtrack. Plenty of extras too, including a short about the dangers of LSD from '67 and the original trailer. You can pick it up from 26th January 2009, priced around £14.99.

Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr Sloane returns to the London stage

Joe Orton's breakthrough 60s play Entertaining Mr Sloane is to have a revival - hitting the London stage from January 2009.

Not just a play, also a superb movie (reviewed on this very site - see poster for it above), Entertaining Mr Sloane revolves around Sloane (played by small screen mod Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey fame), who charms his way into the house of middle-aged spinster Kath (Imelda Staunton) and her gay brother Ed. Both compete for Sloane's affections, leading to blackmail and eventually murder.

The English Touring Theatre production kicks off at Trafalgar Studios 1, 14 Whitehall Street, London SW1 2DY, running from 22nd January to 11th April 2009. Further details and tickets are available from the link below.

Cult Clip: Flame In The Streets (1961)

Some time back, we reviewed Flame In The Streets, a film focusing on racial tensions on the streets of early 60s London. Well, now there's a clip of the movie in YouTube, which does a good job of offering a feel of the film, should you be looking to seek it out.

Not an easy film to find in truth - certainly not available to buy officially on DVD.
