Movie poster auction at Christies

Christies has announced details of its latest Film Poster auction.

The date for your diary is March 5th 2008, with the sale taking place at the South Kensington rooms. Over 200 lots this time, with everything from the earliest cinema through to modern-day classics. And as such, it's worth checking through the lots for your favourite era.

But as this is a cult cinema site, how about a cult movie poster? There's plenty of on offer, in particular US b-movies from the 1950s. One such film is Attack Of The Crab Monsters from 1957 - and if you want the poster (pictured here), it will probably set you back between £600 - £800.

Christies Vintage Film Poster auction

Another Vintage Film Poster auction at Christies, with the usual mix of weird and wonderful movie artwork.

As you would expect, prices vary from the £100 mark right through to four figures, with much in-between, especially Bond and Breakfast At Tiffanys, so if you have any wants in that area, check out the listings. But I thought I'd highlight something a little less obvious - Peeping Tom - the controversial serial killer movie that more or less destroyed the career of director Michael Powell, but is now viewed as a 60s classic.

Posters, I imagine, are scarce. So at £400 - £600, this could be a shrewd investment, if expensive, investment.

Christies Vintage Film Poster auction

The value of film posters is definitely on the rise - and although you'll not find the cheapest ones in Christies Vintage Film Poster auction, you will find some of the most sought-after in the best condition.

There's the usual selection of posters, dating from cinema's earliest days through to latter-day cult items, with prices starting from around £200 and heading well into four figures. But if you want some real value, check out the bulk lots, like the Peter Sellers lot, which includes the poster above and 71 other Italian posters, including the likes of The Pink Panther, Dr Strangelove, Lolita and The Party. It's estimated at around £250 - £400.

James Bond 60s chaise up for sale

Looking for some stylish furniture with a movie heritage? Well, check out this mid-60s chaise used by James Bond in the movie You Only Live Twice. It's going up for sale at The Annual King’s Road Antiques Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall from 15th – 18th March 2007.

Even without the Bond connection, this is a very nice, modernist-inspired piece, made of chrome and leather, with a tan leather cushion. But there is the Bond connection - 007 lands on it when he falls through a stainless steel chute and into Takanas’ office.

If all that has you reaching for the cheque book, make sire you check your account first - it's up for sale at £15,000.

Vintage film posters at Christies

If you want to make a good "art" investment, you can do a lot worse than buy into film posters. Prices have shot up in the last few years, particularly for vintage titles in (this is the important bit)  excellent condition.

But you can still pick up a decent title - either on eBay, or if you want to guarantee the quality and the originality, the Film Poster Auction at Christies.

There's one coming up in London (South Kensington) on 29th June, with prices starting from £200. In fact, if you can spare £300, you can pick up this rather cool Thomas Crown Affair poster. Sounds a lot - but it's an investment, and one unlikely to go down if you look after it.
