BFI brings cult 60s classic Bronco Bullfrog back to the big screen

After steadily growing in status, Bronco Bullfrog was released on DVD by the director himself a couple uf years back. But now the BFI has got on the case, offering up a digitally restored version for the big screen. A DVD/Blu-ray is likely to follow too, although that's not been officially confirmed as yet.

The new version of the movie, which starred a cast of amateurs, is essentially a late 60s love story, two teens, Del and Irene getting together despite the opposition of their respective parents. They dull existence is livened up by the return of suedehead Bronco Bullfrog out of borstal - then made worse by his presence.

DVD Review: Young Soul Rebels (1991)

Young Soul Rebels as a film I steered cleared of when it was released back in the early 90s. Yes, it ticked a few interesting boxes - soul music, a mixing pot of youth cultures at a turbulent time in British history, a decent plot on the face of it - but the critics were harsh and to be honest, they're rarely too wide of the mark. Saying that, time can often by kind to movies - is it the case here? Well, yes and no.

Directed by Isaac Julien and set in the summer of 1977, Young Soul Rebels focuses on two friends and pirate radio DJs (Chris and Caz, played by Valentine Nonyela and Mo Sesay respectively), one straight, one gay and both with ambitions as soul DJs, although not necessarily in the same direction. But the story kicks off in a park - whilst listening to the radio show, a young gay black man called TJ is murdered by a stranger, his radio cassette player stolen and dumped. The police are on the hunt for the killer, a hunt that will eventually take them (wrongly) to Chris.

DVD Review: All The Right Noises (1969)

Some people like fast-moving Hollywood blockbusters, but me? I love realism, especially when it comes in a 60s or 70s flavour. So I was very much looking forward to reviewing Gerry O'Hara's All The Right Noises, a film that's been off my radar until now, despite starring one of my favourite British actors, Tom Bell.

It's part of the second batch of releases from the BFI and Flipside and on the face of it, is very much the sensationalist flick - man falls for underage girl and has a fling. But unlike Pete Walker's Home Before Midnight, All The Right Noises adopts a more serious, level-headed approach to an accidental affair.

DVD Review: Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)

You might know the name, but do you really know about the Baader Meinhof gang? You will after nearly three hours of the Baader Meinhof Complex.

Personally, I've been looking forward to catching this movie for a long, long time - I missed it during its brief tour of the UK's arthouse cinemas last year, so the DVD was a 'must'. And overall, I'm not disappointed, although your take on it might depend on your stamina and love of foreign language flicks.

The Baader Meinhof Complex is certainly a well-made piece of work, based on the factual book by Stefan Aust and directed by Uli Edel (the man behind the big screen version of drug shocker Christiane F.), it uses both period film and some incredible recreations of events to bring together the various strands of political unrest from the late 60s (including a particularly brutal scene around the visit of the Shah of Iran to West Germany and the attempted assassination of left wing activitist Rudi Dutschke), showing how each of the gang's leading lights are drawn into conflict with the authorities and indeed, drawn together.

DVD Review: The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962)

Almost 50 years after it first hit the big screen, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner has been reissued once more on DVD and for the first time ever, on Blu-ray disc. Should you care? Of course you should.

Granted a film from 1962 is going to be very much of 'of its era', but the message contained within Tony Richardson's Brit classic is still as strong today as it ever was - no matter what era were in, people will always fight against the system.

Adapted from the Alan Sillitoe novel, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is Tom Courtenay's masterpiece. Courtenay is Colin Smith, sentenced to a stay in a reform centre for breaking and entering. There's only one way to get out of Ruxton Towers Reformatory - prove that you're a reformed character to the governor (Michael Redgrave).
